Where There is Smoke. There is Nostalgia.

We have some things cooking… and speaking off cooking. The sights and smells of vintage electronics are nostalgic. You can, if you have been into electronics for sometime, smell this photo just from looking at it. That varnish of yesteryear on brown and maroon colored breadboards reminds us of our humble beginnings. And with time comes experience which transform into new experiences and adventures.

While we are waiting for our project to finish up. Let’s chat about those old vintage electronic smells.

The smell you might experience when using old vintage electronics is often referred to as “electronic smell” or “vintage electronics odor.” There are a few reasons why these devices may emit a distinct scent:

Dust and dirt: Over time, dust and dirt can accumulate inside electronic devices, especially in older models with less advanced ventilation systems. When you power on the device, the heat generated can cause these particles to burn or release a particular smell.

Aging components: Electronic components, such as capacitors, resistors, and wiring, may deteriorate over time due to factors like heat, moisture, or exposure to air. When you use an old electronic device, the heat generated can cause these aging components to release a characteristic odor.

Chemicals and adhesives: Vintage electronics often used different types of chemicals and adhesives during manufacturing. These substances can break down over time and produce a distinctive smell when the device is in use.

Mold or mildew: If an electronic device has been stored in a damp or humid environment, it may develop mold or mildew growth. When you turn on the device and it heats up, the moisture in these growths can evaporate, resulting in a musty odor.

It’s important to note that while some smells from vintage electronics are relatively harmless, others may indicate potential hazards. For example, a burning or acrid smell could indicate a malfunctioning component or a potential fire hazard. If you encounter strong or unusual odors when using electronic devices, it’s best to turn them off and seek the assistance of a professional or avoid using them altogether to ensure your safety.

Delicious.
